Article: Off-Page Optimisation

By: Andy Woolfe

Off page optimisation or search engine optimisation is a way of getting your site to improve its search engine rankings. The only thing you can do off-site to increase your rankings is get more back links (getting links to your site from outside sources). The greater amount of links you can get then generally this will lead to higher Page rank in Google and better search engine rankings.

When you are trying to acquire more links you need to aim for quality rather than quantity, not all links are created equal and links from low quality sites will have little or no impact on your rankings. The best types of links that you can get are from trusted sources such as universities, directories such as dmoz and Yahoo or even getting involved in forums that are related to your site even joining Yahoo ask can help,

You should also look at joining Social Book marking sites such as Face book, My Space, Digg and so on.

Writing articles about your product is also a very good way to get links and traffic to your website, this can be done in a few ways either by writing them yourself or there are companies that for a fee can write them for you, these are known as ghost writers. You can either then pay a submission company to submit your articles for you or you can submit your articles to article directories yourself.

It is sometimes difficult to spot the good links; here are a few questions you should ask yourself when you are looking at sites or pages to get links from.

Is this site or page relevant to my site?

Is this site linking out to any low quality non related sites?

Is this site or page going to send my site the right sort of traffic?

Is this site or page ranking well in the search engines?

Does this site have a lot of links from other websites?

Another thing to enforce is when the search engines look at the text (known as anchor text) that links to your site, if you are trying to rank for the phrase "houses for sale" make sure that the site you are wanting to link to uses that anchor text for your link, you should always try to use that type of text but also try to vary the text so as not to make it look un-natural, try using "houses for sale in England" or "English houses for sale" by including that phrase in the text or the alt tag of the link then that is going to help your website to rank higher for that particular phrase.

Take these things into consideration, when submitting links to other sites and you will be on your way towards good off page Optimisation and good rankings in the search engines.
